CT urography ( CTU or CT-IVU ) has now largely replaced traditional IVU in imaging the genitourinary tract. It gives both anatomical and functional information, albeit with a relatively higher dose of radiation.

X-ray pictures are taken at specific times during the exam, allowing your doctor can clearly see your urinary tract and look for any abnormalities. Over the past decade, computed tomographic (CT) urography has emerged as the primary imaging modality for evaluating the urinary tract in various clinical settings, including the initial workup of hematuria. The majority of CT Urogram examinations were negative (72.48%). Of the positive studies, only 4 exams (1.09%) Urography Urography uses imaging and contrast material to evaluate or detect blood in urine, kidney or bladder stones, and cancer in the urinary tract. Urography with conventional x-ray is known as intravenous pyelogram (IVP).

Metal objects including jewelry, eyeglasses, dentures and hairpins may affect the CT images and should be left at home or removed prior to your exam. With the widespread implementation of CT urography, it is critical for radiologists to understand normal ureteral anatomy and the varied appearance of pathologic ureteral conditions at CT urography. Pathologic findings at CT urography include congenital abnormalities, filling defects, dilatation, narrowing, and deviations in course. studies that CT Urography (CT abdomen and pelvis without and with intravenous contrast) may not be warranted in specific patient cohorts, particularly young individuals without risk factors for urinary tract malignancy, who may be evaluated with a CT exam without contrast only (CT renal stone protocol). CONCLUSION: This study shows that the individual mean effective dose to patients undergoing CT urography has decreased by 60%, from 29.9/22.5 (F/M) mSv in 1997 to 11.7/8.8 (F/M) mSv in 2008. If you are taking any medications, such as MR-urography (MRU) and CT-urography (CTU) provide refined imaging of the upper urinary tract not achievable with conventional intravenous urography (IVU). The traditional MR-urographic technique utilizes unenhanced, heavily T2 -weighted turbo spin-echo sequences for obtaining static fluid images of the urinary tract independent of the excretory renal function. Featuring over 500 images, this atlas is the first text on performing and interpreting CT urography. Chapters detail the indications and techniques for CT urography, review the risks of radiation exposure, show how normal urinary tract anatomy and variants appear on CT scans, and demonstrate a wide range of urinary tract abnormalities as they appear on thin-section CT. Imaging plays a significant role in the initial diagnosis of UTO, with anatomic imaging (primarily ultrasound (US) and non-contrast computed tomography (CT)) serving as screening tools for the detection of the dilation of the urinary collecting systems (i.e., hydronephrosis). CT urography (CTU) is commonly used in the evaluation of hematuria, and specifically tailored to image the renal collecting system, ureters and bladder in addition to the renal parenchyma. Initial imaging includes a noncontrast phase to detect renal calculi as a source of hematuria. CT Urography for Evaluation of the Ureter S E Potenta and others RadioGraphics, 2015.
